Plate Tectonics, Earthquake and Volcano Research Project

The information will be presented in a power point.

This presentation will be one power point with four parts.

Include images and pictures with this report

Part 1 : Plate Tectonics. Please conduct the research and write what you learn in your own words. Do not copy and paste!

1. Describe the theory of plate tectonics and make sure to include information about Pangaea.

2. What is convection within the mantle and how does it affect the motion of the plates?

3. List and describe the different types of plate boundaries.

4. Explain the difference between a subduction zone and a mid-ocean ridge.

5. List the major plates of the Earth and what plate is Kentucky located?

6. Include a map of the plates of the world.

7. List the websites you used that were the most helpful for part 1.

Part 2: Earthquakes. Please conduct the research and write what you learn in your own words. Do not copy and paste!

1. What is a fracture and a fault within a rock layer?

2. Explain what causes earthquakes and what is the difference between the focus and epicenter?

3. Why does California have more earthquakes than Kentucky?

4. Where is the New Madrid Fault and when was its last major earthquake?

5. List the websites you used that were the most helpful for part 2.

Part 3: Volcanoes. Please conduct the research and write what you learn in your own words. Do not copy and paste!

1. List and describe the different types of volcanoes.

2. How is a hot spot volcano different from other volcanoes?

3. What is the difference between magma and lava?

4. What is a "black smoker"?

5. Describe the Pacific Ring of Fire.

6. List the websites you used that were the most helpful for part 3.

Part 4: Volcano Research. Please conduct the research and write what you learn in your own words. Do not copy and paste!

1. Mt. Pelee
2. Mt. St. Helens
3. Lake Nyos
4. Nevado Del Ruiz
5. Paricutin
6. Krakatau
7. Kiluea
8. Ruapehu
9. Mt. Pinatubo
10. Mt. Vesuvius

When you are ready ask Mr. Crump to assign you a number!
Your mission is to find information and report one of the volcanoes above.

Answer the following 10 questions.

Your report must include:

  1. Name of volcano
  2. Type of volcano
  3. Geographic location
  4. Name of the nearest cities and towns that are closest to volcano and list the distance from the volcano.
  5. Populations of the cities or towns listed above.
  6. Date of most recent eruption.
  7. Date of most destructive eruption. List the effects the eruption had on humans, weather, buildings, forests, etc.
  8. List all associated events with the past eruptions (earthquakes, floods, mudslides, ash clouds, etc.)
  9. Predict when the next eruption will take place.
  10. List three interesting facts about your volcano that are not listed above.
  11. List the websites you used that were the most helpful for part 4.

.Maps and pictures of the volcano and its surroundings must be included.
