Mary Cassatt (1845-1926) was an American artist who traveled to France in the late 1800's to study and paint with a group of artists known as the Impressionists.  Her paintings are often of mothers and their children.  Cassatt used both oils and pastels in her works and  is credited with bringing the impressionist style of painting to the United States.

The painting "Children Playing on the Beach" is one of Mary Cassatt's most famous.  It shows two little girls playing on the beach.  Mary Cassatt often painted a child along with their family members.  Notice the soft look to the painting.  This is often a trait of the Impressionist Painters.
