Giotto (1267?- 1336?) was a
painter of the Gothic Period (Aprox. 1200-1300) who painted in the style
of Fresco. Fresco is a type of wall painting on plaster. He is
one of the first painters to create the human figure in a more realistic
style. He was one of the first to use perspective in his paintings.
His paintings are religious in nature and are often found on chapel and
church walls or wood panels in Italy.

"Madonna and Child" is a icon
(religious artwork on a panel) that was created by Giotto for
worship. This byzantine (or early Christian) type of painting was created
for a church and shows the Christ child with Mary. Notice how flat
the image looks. This is a trait of byzantine art. Also
notice how the baby looks more adult-like in his features.
Byzantine artists did not know how to show child-like features at the
time. Giotto was one of the first artists to use perspective
(painting in a more 3-Dimentional look) in his paintings.
