The Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo (1474-1564) considered himself a sculptor first but is probably known for his paintings found in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Rome.  Michelangelo created fantastic sculptures of biblical characters such as Mary, Jesus, Young David and Moses.

In 1508, Pope Julius II persuaded Michelangelo to paint a large ceiling and some walls in the Vatican.  The ceiling was found in the Sistine Chapel which is in the Vatican in Rome.  Michelangelo, who wanted to continue to sculpt a tomb that he was working on at  the time, finished the large ceiling in just under 4 years. This is considered one of his most famous works.  The ceiling tells stories of the Old Testament in the ible.
