"The School of Athens" (1510-1511) is a wall fresco (painting on plaster) and is often considered Raphael's masterpiece. This painting shows Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle in the center, along with Pythagoras holding the book in the lower left foreground. Raphael even added his rival Michelangelo seated at almost center of the foreground leaning on one hand and writing. It is thought that Raphael even put himself in the painting on the far right behind a column looking out at the viewer. |
