Romeo and Juliet. Peter Pan. The Jungle Book. Les Miserables. They are all performed in the theater. Ms. Labrillazo is the technical drama teacher at SCAPA, she is known by her students as "Ms. Lab". When I say technical, I don't mean that our other drama teacher isn't a teacher, I mean that Ms. Lab teaches the technical side of drama. The set, costumes, play analysis, and mask work, these are some the things we study and you will learn about in Ms. Lab's class.
"She's really funny and nice," quotes one of her 6th grade students. This student is a major in Ms. Lab's class, she sees her every day. Imagine coming home every day with a smile on your face being able to report what you did in drama that day. Being in Ms. Lab's class is a sure fire way to make this happen.
"She's like a perfect teacher. It's like she was made to come here. She's cool. She's really cool." quotes one of Ms. Lab's 6th grade minors who sees her 3 times a week. Other comments that people have said about Ms. Lab are:
"She's nice, she compliments me on what I'm doing. She doesn't just teach you boring stuff, she makes it fun."
"Some people may think she's strict, but she's really nice. She wants us all to do our best. She's the right teacher for drama."
What makes a good teacher? Experience, and Ms. Lab has it! Her experiences include the facts that she has been teaching since 1991, has directed over 50 plays, and has stage managed 70 musicals/plays in the region. She has just previously finished directing The Wizard of Oz. As I said, Ms. Lab teaches the tech side of drama. She says,
" I definitely like the tech side of drama. Although it is less recognized by the public, the technical aspects are just as important and challenging as the acting part of a show."
Ms. Lab has been teaching for fifteen years at SCAPA. Ms. Lab says that if she could not be a drama teacher she would like to be a touring stage manager, a special education teacher, or a drama therapist.
As you can see, Ms. Lab is loved by her students and is the perfect drama teacher. Wherefore art thou teacher? Because she's caring and she makes sure everyone understands everything!
