Immigration Activity
The purpose of this activity is to find out about immigration laws and discover what it is like to be an immigrant to America.
To begin, go to Tates Creek’s website: http://www.tatescreek.fcps.net/. Next, click on “media center” in the left tool bar. Then click on Grolier Online. At the top of this page where it says “find it fast”, type in the term “immigration” and click on “go”.
75 choices should automatically appear. From these select some of the articles to read. Then answer the following questions based on the articles you chose to read. Write your answers on your own paper, or type them in a word document. You need to restate the question in your answer.
1. What is the definition of immigration?
2. Why did people choose to immigrate to America?
3. What is immigration like in the 20th century? The 21st century?
4. There are several articles about Asian Americans. What are five things you learned about immigrants from Asia?
5. What is the INS? What are some of the responsibilities of that organization?
6. There are several articles about illegal immigration. What are five things you learned about illegal immigration?
7. Define “alien”.
8. What are three additional pieces of information you learned after browsing through these articles about immigration?
