SICILIAN SMOKE
A brown plume of smoke and ash streams southward for hundreds of miles from Sicily's Mount Etna on October 28. NASA's Terra satellite captured the stunning outburst, which followed hundreds of small earthquakes on the Italian island. There could be more trouble brewing in the Mediterranean. Scientists think Europe's largest volcano is in a geologic transition from oozing eruptions to more explosive upheavals.

    Read more about Mt. Vesuvius

During the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, about 10 feet (3 m) of tephra fell on Pompeii, burying everything except the roofs of some buildings.  The mold of a dog is shown in the above photo. The poor animal was chained to a post and struggled for hours before finally succumbing to the ash.

Eldfell ("fire mountain" in Icelandic) is a volcano on the island of Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago 15 miles (25 km) south of Iceland. In January of 1973, an eruption began along a 1.5 mile (2 km) long fissure not far from the center of the town of Vestmannaeyjar. The fissure extended across the entire island, producing a spectacular curtain of fire. Nearly all of the island's 5,300 residents were evacuated to the mainland. Click on the picture above for more information about Eldfell.

Climate and Terrestrial Biomes
Regional climates may be described in terms of five different types of biomes. A biome is characterized by the particular combination of temperature, humidity, vegetation, and associated animal life in an area. This map shows the distribution of the world’s major biomes: rain forest and savanna, mixed forest and grasslands, needle-leaf and mixed forests, steppe and desert, and tundra and icecaps.
