Conclusions

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation is still a new procedure. Sufficient evidence supporting the positive and lasting results of neuromuscular electrical stimulation could not be found. There was evidence in Freed, Freed, Chatburn and Christian’s study that electrical stimulation could temporarily aid in swallowing, however, the treatment had to be repeated due to return to previous condition. Based on the research studied, SLP’s should be cautious in employing such new procedures without substantially documented research.
