Big Questions
- When do students use the library at VPE?
Although each homeroom comes to the library
for a 30 minute lesson/check out time once every six days, the library
is open for use by students the entire school day.
- How many books can students check out?
Lower primary students begin check out after a
3 week lesson on care of books and use of library. Then they may check
out 1 book to be returned the following library class for another book.
Upper primary students may check out 1 book at a time the first semester
and 1-2 after that. Intermediate students may check out 2 books at a
time.
- Are fines charges for overdue books?
No fines are charged for late books. Students
may not check out more books until they are returned. Fines are charged
for damaged or lost books.
- Does the library need parent volunteers?
Yes! We love to have parents shelving and
organizing the books, working on projects, helping students with Reading
Counts quizzes, help at the book fair, etc.
- How are books selected for the library?
All books in our library are chosen from
literary reviews and magazines, student or teacher requests, or
librarian recommended. They are chosen for our students based on
curriculum, interests, ages and reading levels.
- What is Reading Counts?
Reading Counts is a computer program from
Scholastic, Inc. We have over 3000 quizzes for books in our library.
Students read age and level appropriate books, take 10 question quizzes
on the books they read, and earn points based on their quiz scores. Each
month students are acknowledged for their points in various ways both
individually and as a class. Each year our library theme is based around
Reading Counts.
7. What is the morning show?
Our WVPE Morning Show is a daily 4-7 minute show produced by a crew of
5th grade students. These students work during school and after on
the program doing research, interviewing, developing features, and
camera and editing work.
