RATIONALE: We have discussed in-class the opposing viewpoints on the issue of capital punishment. We have also completed research on the topic in the library. Now it is time for you to take all of this information that you have gathered, make a decision about capital punishment, and defend it.

ASSIGNMENT:  Your assignment is to read the attached opinion piece from the Cincinnati Enquirer. As you read it, consider your opinion on the matter. Write a letter to the editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer commenting on this story and explaining your views. Address your letter as follows:

CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT: Your paper will be graded on the following elements:
1) The writing is focused on your purpose (commenting on the story and explaining your views)
2) The writing has an appropriate, professional, and persuasive tone
3) The paper has a depth of idea development. In other words, you are thorough in your discussion.
4) Your ideas are supported with facts from the article and/or from outside sources.
5) Your paper is typed in a proper business letter format (block, modified block, etc.)
6) Your paper has a logical, effective organization.
7) The paper’s sentence structure is controlled and varied.
8) The language used is acceptable and effective.
9) The paper has few errors in spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
