AP BIOLOGY: SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2008

Welcome to AP Biology!  This upcoming year will be a demanding one – full of challenging material and plenty of lab work!

If you look at any standard college biology text, you’ll see there is a HUGE amount of information that it contains…all of which the College Board expects us to get through in one year’s time.  It’s a lot of material…some of it you should be familiar with from “baby bio”, and some of it is brand new…but if we take it one chunk at a time we should be able to get there.  To help us get a jumpstart on our journey, I am asking you to do a summer assignment.

 1. Join your online classroom.  To join, go to www.nicenet.org.  You will need the following info:

Class Name: TCHS AP BIO

Your Class Key: OZ63737T7Z

Create your login and password – but make sure it is something you can remember, because I don’t have access to passwords.  Also, make sure that is identifiable as you (I know cutiepie76 sounds cute, but it makes it difficult for bookkeeping purposes!).

 2. Obtain a copy of the following book:

The Evolution Explosion: How Humans Cause Rapid Evolutionary Change

by Stephen R. Palumbi (2001)     ISBN #: 0-393-32338-2

All the book stores in town carry it – call in advance and they can hold a copy for you…or order it off of Amazon (or find a former AP Bio student!).  Read the first four chapters – and be prepared to begin discussing this material the first day in class.  J

 3. Obtain an AP Biology Review Book.  This is not required, but definitely worthwhile – it will help you with the class, and if you are thinking about taking the test, it will help prepare you for that as well!  Amazon.com offers the best prices…pick a book that suits your learning style.  The TCHS library has several copies of different ones that you can check out.

It sounds like a lot, I know…but it will help us get to where we need to be.  I am looking forward to a fantastic school year!

If you have any questions about your assignment, you can e-mail me throughout the summer:

Have a great summer, and make sure you are ready for the first day of class!
