IB BIOLOGY: SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2008

Welcome to IB Biology!  This upcoming year will be a demanding one – full of challenging material and plenty of lab work!  The material you learned in your sophomore biology class will provide a foundation for the upcoming two years ahead – so make sure that you hold onto your stuff, you’ll probably find it useful!!

There are a couple things I would like for you to do over the summer…which include:

 1. Join your online classroom.  To join, go to www.nicenet.org.  You will need the following info:

Class Name: TCHS IB BIO 2010

Your Class Key: 0237508T78

Create your login and password – but make sure it is something you can remember, because I don’t have access to passwords.  Also, make sure that is identifiable as you (I know cutiepie76 sounds cute, but it makes it difficult for bookkeeping purposes!).

 2. Obtain a copy of the following book:

The Evolution Explosion: How Humans Cause Rapid Evolutionary Change

by Stephen R. Palumbi (2001)     ISBN #: 0-393-32338-2

All the book stores in town carry it – call in advance and they can hold a copy for you…or order it off of Amazon. All you have to do is obtain a copy.  J

3. Watch I, Robot. Determine whether Sonny and Viki are living things.  Write a position paper stating your conclusions, making sure to make reference to the characteristics of life that helped you make you decision.  If you use references, please cite your sources in the standard format (APA or MLA).

 4. Obtain an AP Biology Review Book.  This is not required, but definitely worthwhile –I’ve heard from former students that it is useful to have around.  Amazon.com offers the best prices…pick a book that suits your learning style.  The TCHS library has several copies of different ones that you can check out.

It sounds like a lot, I know…but it will help us get to where we need to be.  I am looking forward to a fantastic school year!

If you have any questions about your assignment, you can e-mail me throughout the summer:

Danielle.mink@fayette.kyschools.us  .  You can check out your class website too: staff.fcps.net/dmink – IB Biology link.

Have a great summer, and make sure you are ready for the first day of class!
