Advanced Placement United States History “Summer Packet”

Summer, 2007

Web Page:  http://staff.fcps.net/dminor

  1. Reading assignment:  You are to read the first five chapters of United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination (AMSCO).  Chapter one begins with Exploration, Discovery and Settlement, 1492-1700 and Chapter five is The American Revolution, 1775-1783.

  1. You are to outline all five chapters of AMSCO – chapters one through five.  You are to word process all outlines and be detailed. The outlines are for you to use as a study guide. Each outline should contain a title and chapter number.  Outlines should be completed in Roman numeral format, example:

I.

   A.

       1.

  1. You may complete outlines with a study group of no more than four students.  You should set up these study groups prior to summer and inform Mrs. Minor of your group. This will be the only time that you will be allowed to complete outlines with a group.  However, it would be to your advantage to complete the outlines on your own so that you will learn the material in more detail.  What is most important is that you do not put off completing the outlines since they are due August 22, 2007.  Value of “Summer Packet” – 150 points.

  1. For the summer assignment, you may use the school-owned book of  AMSCO but do not write in the school copy.  If you want to order your own copy of AMSCO over the summer try ordering through Amazon.com or through the AMSCO publisher at www.amscopub.com. The cost of the book through Amazon will be approximately $26.00 and through the publisher approximately $17.00.  When school starts up in August I will take orders for students who would like their own copy.  Many students prefer this so that they can highlight their readings.  The cost will be approximately $17.00 but by the time we place the order and receive the shipment it will be mid-September.

  1. For those working with a group: Each group will turn in one completed outline of Chapters 1-5.  You are to make sure that each group member has a copy of all chapters for study purposes.

  1. To help prepare for the Unit 1 evaluation you should identify and study the items on the attached AP History Review Sheet for Unit 1.The review sheet will not be collected as a grade.  You need to start learning how to study on your own!!  This exam will be the third day of classes August 22, 2007. This exam will be a multiple choice AP style exam – 80 multiple choice questions for a total of 160 points.  Most students are surprised that they do not test well on this first exam.  You can test well if you read Chapters 1 - 5, complete your outlines, work through the multiple choice questions in AMSCO at the end of each chapter and work through the review sheet.  This exam score will be entered as your first evaluation grade.

  1. For 30 points EXTRA CREDIT you may read a book from the suggested list provided by Mrs. Minor (see attached) and complete a book review following the format (see attached). Your book review write up must be word processed, 12 font. This is due by the second week of classes for the 2007-2008 school year; due August 24, 2007.  This attached reading list is limited.  There are thousands of American history books you can choose from. If you have another book you prefer to read (non-fiction) that is not on the approved attached reading list then you must obtain PRIOR approval from Mrs. Minor.  Remember your book choice must relate to American history.  Current American history would not be as beneficial as prior American history because the majority of what you are tested over does not cover current history. Aside from this extra credit option, extra credit is only offered once each semester in the form of another book review assignment.  This is a great way to help your AP grade and to help you have additional knowledge about a given time period in history.  This is what is required of you on the AP exam – bringing in outside historical information.

  1. At any time during the summer if you have any questions about any of the above assignments/readings/extra credit please email or call me at delores.minor@fayette.kyschools.us or 271-9513.  If you call or email be sure to leave first and last name and a number so that I can return your call.  I will be on vacation July 6 – July 21, 2007. If needed, you may call me on my cell during my vacation – 859-494-9513. Otherwise I will be in town for the summer.
