Class Information

Introduction

This is my 3rd year of teaching.  I am a graduate of the University of Kentucky.  I finished my Bachelor’s Degree in December 2006 where I came to J.R. Ewan and subbed for Mrs. Caudill’s maternity leave in a k/1 classroom.  I then went to Maxwell Elementary and subbed for a 2nd grade teacher for the rest of the school year who was on a maternity leave as well.  I have taught 2nd grade since I started 3 years ago.  I am so excited to start this year at Liberty!  I can't wait to meet all my students and make this year a great success!

Contact Information

If you need to contact me there are several ways to do so.  The best way is through email.  I will be checking it in the mornings before school, during my planning and after school.  The telephone is another great way to contact me, 381-4979.  I will check phone messages at the end of the day (AFTER ALL STUDENTS HAVE BEEN DISMISSED).  If you have an urgent message that I need to know about before the end of the school day please let the office know so that they can get the message to me.  Urgent messages include transportation changes and/or family emergencies.  You can also send notes to me with your child in their PRIDE Pouch.  I will check the PRIDE Pouch every morning as students are coming in the classroom.

Newsletter

The classroom newsletter will be sent home every other Friday.  Please look for this in your child’s PRIDE Notebook.  I will put a small summary of the weeks' events in the different subject areas.  I will also include information about upcoming events in our classroom and school wide.  There will be fieldtrip information when necessary, gym reminders to wear tennis shoes, and other important announcements.  Some weeks there may be other important papers attached to the newsletter as well!

Lunch Money

Please send your student’s lunch money in a Ziploc baggie with their name on the outside.  If you send a check, please make sure your student’s name is written on the check so we know whose account to put it in.  Please place the baggie or check in your child's PRIDE Pouch.  There is also an online meal pay system if you are interested.  There is a link from the Liberty website where you can add money to your child’s lunch account with a credit card.  Lunch cost this year:

Child: $2.00    Reduced .40

Adult: $3.50

 Breakfast

Breakfast will be served at the following times:

Start 7:15 am

End: 7:40 am

Cost:

Child: $ 1.35     Reduced .30
Adults $1.75

 Book Orders

Book orders will go home at the beginning of the month.  I will put reminders in the newsletter as necessary!  If you would like to order, follow the steps below.

1.     Make your selections from the order forms.  Please make sure your child’s name is on every form.

2.     Add the total of all forms.

3.     Make your check out to Scholastic.  (Not the school, please.)  You may write one check for all of the forms, regardless of the name of the company on the form.  If you are paying with cash we will only accept exact change.  Please do not send more money than needed as we do not keep change to return to you.

4.     Place the order forms and the check/cash in a Ziploc baggie with your child’s name on the outside.

5.     Place the baggie in your child's PRIDE Pouch for me to check and take to place the order!

Birthdays

Students may bring in a small treat on their birthday.  Please send only cookies, cupcakes or individually wrapped treats for the class.  Also, make sure there is enough for all students in the class.  If you would like to send in drinks please make sure they are individually packaged (capri suns, juice boxes, etc.).  Please do not send anything other than these approved snack items on birthdays.  If you have birthday invitations to hand out there must be an invitation for every student in the class in order to hand them out at school.  These will be placed in classmates cubbies either before the school day begins or while we are packing up for dismissal.  Thanks so much for your cooperation!

Snack

We will have a time for snack every day.  A snack calendar will be sent home for the entire month.  Your child’s name will be written in on the snack calendar on the day they are supposed to bring snack.  Please send enough snack for all students.  We will rotate through every student in the class so every one should have a specific snack day multiple times through out the year!  Please DO NOT send snacks that contain peanuts or peanut oils in them because some students may have allergic reactions to peanut products.

Transportation

If your child is going home a different way than they normally do, it is very important that you send a note with your child documenting the changes.  If I do not have a note documenting the change, I will be sending them home the way I normally do.  Please remind your child before school that they have a note for me.  It is also school policy that a child may not leave with someone who is not on the emergency contact card located in the office.  *Please place any transportation notes in your child's PRIDE Pouch.*

Student Planners

Students are required to bring home planners every day.  Their planner will be placed in their PRIDE Notebooks when we put them together at school.  The students will come in, in the mornings, and have a seat with their planner open to the current date.  I will have a morning message on the board for them to copy.  This message may be different reminders about events, homework, specials, etc.  Behavior will also be monitored in the student planner.  At the end of the day I will mark each student's reteaches/color changes in the space to the right of the morning message.  Their spelling words will also be stapled on the right side of their planner each week.  Please check their behavior each night in their planners.  J  If a student loses their planner, they will be responsible for paying to replace it.  Replacement planners last year were $7.00.

Behavior Plan

I believe that education is a team effort on the parts of the child, parent, and teachers.  The more support your child has at home, the more successful your child will be in school.  You might hear your child mention a few of these phrases over the next few months.  Please take time to read over the strategies I will be using in the classroom to manage behavior and think of rewards as well as consequences for school behavior. J

This year we will be focusing on reteaching incorrect behavior rather then just punishing it.  The students will be taught very direct explicit expectations about how they are to act in different situations at school (hallway, classroom, cafeteria, etc.) if these expectations aren’t met they will then have a ‘reteach.’  This will take place during their recess where the student will practice the correct behavior and will discuss what the expectation of that rule and or guideline for success is.  When this is completed the student will be allowed to join the class at recess.  If there are repeated occurrences the student will also be required to fill out a think time sheet which will allow them to reflect on their actions as well as come up with a plan to help fix their behavior.

When they are given a reteach there will be a color change chart that hangs in the front of the room.  They will come to the chart and move their clip up the chart-one color per reteach.  The students will have 2 warnings to redirect their behavior before making the color change/reteach.  The color change chart is a great visual for the students to be able to stay accountable for their behavior in school.

Apple Jar

The Apple Jar is a reward I reserve for students who go above and beyond the behavior that is expected of them.  Students who have the opportunity to go to the Apple Jar have shown exceptional, model behavior.  I also reward 100% on spelling tests with a trip to the Apple Jar.  If your child does not want a treat from the Apple Jar they may chose a sticker from the sticker box as an alternative.  Treats from the Apple Jar will ONLY be eaten during lunch or brought home!
