Rocket Unit

8th Grade ROCK-IT Right at Hayes is Under Construction

Interdisciplinary Unit: Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies

Subject Area Objective Engagement & Assessment
Math The students will be able to use an equation to calculate the height of a rocket. The students will collect data and construct a graph that appropriately represents the data. The students will use math process skills to construct a rocket. The students will construct a rocket, launch it, and calculate it's altitude. The students will graph the data, appropriately.

Assessment: Calculate the height of the rock and construct a graph (Use the information from the data sheet).

Science The students will be able to identify Newton's three laws of motion. The students will be able to describe the affect of forces on the motion of the rocket. The students will apply experimental design and scientific method techniques to test the affect of one variable on the altitude of a rocket launched into the air. Construct a poster that illustrates the motion of the rocket from launch to landing. Identify all three laws of motion. Identify the forces acting on the rocket at 5 different stages during the rockets launch. Write captions at each stage, describing how these forces affect the motion of the rocket.

Assessment: Rocket Scoring

Social Studies The students will be able to describe the role rockets played in American history. (The assessment will be placed here soon.)
Language Arts The students will be able to identify the elements of a novel after reading "October Sky." The students will also draw some comparisons between the book and the movie. (The assessment will be placed here soon.)

Notice: In order for students to participate in this project, the student must be in attendance with a minimum of one absence. Please check the team calendar for launch days, as they will be posted in the next day or two (5/12/09). If your child will miss days, please contact your child's Math teacher and discuss other options. If your child is going to miss several days or does miss several days during this project, he/she will be given an alternate assignment to make up for the instructional time missed. The alternate assignment can be found below.

Activities and Worksheets

Read "How to build a rocket." Read these instructions carefully. You may need the help of an adult when doing this activity. Please ask a parent or guardian to assist you. Adult supervision is required.

Complete Rocket Finding Hidden Variables. In this activity, you will collect qualitative data, while watching your peers launch their rockets. You will use this data to discuss how unexpected changes may have affected your data.

Alternative Assignment

Read the internet article called "Rocket"  and follow the directions on the worksheet called, "Rocket Web Quest."

Lastly, design a crossword puzzle on "Rockets", using the vocabulary below:
