Grading:

The grading and homework policies at Edythe J. Hayes Middle are designed to provide accurate assignment of grades with the intent to demonstrate a clear relationship between student performance and student learning. All parents/guardians and students are asked to sign the homework policy at the beginning of the year.

Class Work     20%                            A=92%-100%

Quizzes/Tests       50%                             B= 83%-91%

                                                              C=74%-82%

Homework      30%                        D=65%-73%

                                                         F=64%  and below

Make-up work policy:

•    It is the responsibility of the student to get make-up work from each teacher. Students shall be allowed the same number of days to complete the make-up work, as they were absent, plus one (1).

•    Although students are not entitled, in general, to make-up work missed for absences because of school (district policy), it is the goal of Edythe J. Hayes and the district that every student succeed academically. Accordingly, students having absences because of suspensions from school are allowed to do the following:

o    The major tests (e.g., finals or unit tests) for credit upon returning from a suspension;

o    Have homework checked for accuracy without credit; and

o    Hand in major projects or term papers, without loss of credit.

A Three Strike Policy

As you may have guessed, these rules carry consequences. When every team member is on target, obeying the rules, you will enjoy class more because everyone wins-that's the consequence for obedience. When someone chooses to disobey, there's a sense in which it hurts everyone. So, for the sake of the class as a whole, here are the consequences for disobedience.

1.  First Offense- Verbal warning by the teacher

2.  Second Offense- One team mark given (in addition teacher may also move student)

3.  Third Offense- Isolation student will be sent to time out in another classroom and a

     second team mark will be given. Also, a phone call to parents will be made.

4.  Fourth Offense-Referral (Safe or suspended from school depending on the school

     administration.) Plus a parent phone call. Please, be advised if the offense is serious

     enough to disrupt the classroom learning environment students may have to be sent

     directly to safe. This is up to the discretion of the teacher and team leader.

     What are team marks?  If a student breaks the rules in my classroom as outlined above they will receive team marks. Each day every teacher on our team will meet and discuss if any student has any marks.  If one student receives a total of three marks from different teachers on the very same day, then that student will immediately be required to attend our team's detention on Friday afternoon.  This detention is usually from 4:05-5:00 pm. Please keep in mind marks only count for one day they do not carry forward. If a student earns three Friday detentions in one nine week period, or any referrals to safe, or suspension from school they are NOT allowed to participate in any field trips during that nine week period.

Silent Lunch

  If a student does not complete homework properly that student will be assigned silent lunch until the work has been appropriately completed. Reminder homework is the responsibility of the student not the parent.
