Establishing Good Homework Habits

As parents, you have the opportunity to have a positive affect upon your child’s future by helping him/her develop strong homework habits now that he/she can take with him/her into adulthood.

Here are some things that you can do to help set up "healthy" homework practices:

Help your child find an appropriate place to do schoolwork. (Well-lit, comfortable, and quiet) Make that spot the "designated homework spot".

The television, radio, etc. should not be on near the spot. Other children should be studying away from the spot, too.

Create an area with the proper lighting. Eye fatigue can get in the way of school success.

Make sure necessary supplies are handy. (See list below).

Establish routine study hours. Keep to these times as closely as possible.

Encourage you child to do his or her best. Do not do the homework for him/her. Guide your child by giving directions. Let him/her think and problem solve by him or herself.

Praise your child’s efforts for those small steps taken each day, not just at grading time.

Make sure that your child has a routine for returning completed homework and that it gets back to school on time. (Prescription sheets at Dixie help this)

If your child is not getting homework home, not wanting to complete the assignments, or having difficulty, contact the teacher and communicate with each other to remedy the problems.

Remember, what you do today will set the tone for your child’s success tomorrow.
