I Do

By:  Grace, 5th grade

“Mommy! My tooth came out, I been working on that one for weeks!” four year old Elizabeth yelled with a great deal of excitement.

“Oh, you look so silly. Now go wipe your mouth off so you don’t get that sweet little dress of yours all stained up.” Said Ms. K.

“Yeah flower girl you better stick that tooth back up into your gum or you’ll look like the toothless wonder.” Chimed in the brides maid.

Elizabeth waddled her way down the way to big, and way too scary, grand hall of the gigantic church. She wondered to herself all of the sudden, I wonder what it feels like to be a bridesmaid? Do you have to do dirty things? Like picking up trash and making the bride bologna sandwiches? By the time Elizabeth had completed this thought, she had reached the facilities. Her hand touched the dirty handle on the door and eventually was in the restroom.

She stared at the hole in her mouth. She thought that she looked like one of those clown toys at Disney Land. Those ones that no one ever wants to play because the balls that you are supposed to throw at the clowns teeth are too big and you can easily win. “Well I better straighten” up, she thought, “so the ring “Bear” will give me a big smooch!” Elizabeth scrubbed her face with soap so much that her skin looked all red and blotchy.

When Elizabeth was satisfied, she turned around and started to leave the restroom but then an idea popped up in her little diabolical head. She thought to herself, “what can I do to look more like mommy, after all she is the bride and she is getting married?”

So once again she waddled down the hallway of the way too big and way to scary church.  She finally got into her dressing room with her mom and the bridesmaid. “Mommy, can I borrow your make up?” asked Elizabeth hopefully.

“No,” replied the bride.

This though did not distract the little flower girl. She had already expected this reaction from her mother.

“Oh all right I guess that your right mommy,” Elizabeth preached. “After all you are the grown up.”

Elizabeth pretended to be all pitiful and sad and she pretended to quietly leave the room. As soon as no one could see her she dropped to the ground and started to crawl quietly back into the room. In some way she looked like a cat quietly stalking its prey. With the makeup bag just in front of her scrawny little arms and the tension high she quickly grabbed the bag and crawled once again, but this time out of the room.

Once Elizabeth’s waddling had carried her once more to the restroom, she propped herself up on the sink and got out the brightest tube of lip stick from her mother’s makeup bag. She tried her best to keep the bright red goop in line on her lips, but she would just always get that one itch on her leg and the whole thing would get messed up.

Finally, she just gave up on the whole idea and decided to just use lipstick on her whole body. Blush, eye shadow, and mascara were all made out of lipstick. Then, she had one more idea, she thought, “don’t all famous people have moles?” With that she put one last dot of make up on her cheek and silently muttered, “Oh I look so hot!”

The bathroom door opened quickly and Elizabeth nearly fell off the counter. “Oh honey, you look horrible – is that my makeup?” said Ms. K.

“Mommy I can explain!” said Elizabeth “I just want the bear to kiss me!”

Her mom just stood there in complete disbelief. A loud bell must have interrupted her thinking because she looked a little stunned. “They must be calling for me. I think it is time for me to go get married! Sweeties just clean yourself up and come down into the dressing room and pace yourself when it’s your turn to walk down the big isle.  Oh and I will punish you later.” Ms. K. Left the room.

“Wow” thought Elizabeth “My mommy must really want me to get married!”

Elizabeth ignored cleaning herself up and walked swiftly down to the dressing room. Everyone was rushing her to get everything done just too quickly. Before she knew it she was standing in front of the ring” bear” throwing big heaps of flowers on one-hundred year old ladies.

“Do you promise to always love and care for this woman?” said the preacher.

“I do” said the ring “bear” and also the groom. This was quit funny, and it made some of the old, or should I say ancient people laugh.

“And do you?” said the preacher.

“I do” said Elizabeth in unison with her mom. This was also quite hilarious, and it got even more old people cracking up.

“You may now kiss the bride.” said the preacher. As her mother did, Elizabeth leaned in to kiss her almost to be “husband.”  The ring “bear” also leaned in to give her a big smooch. They kissed. As she leaned back she felt her cheeks getting warm. The little bride put her hands up to her face to see if her cheeks were actually warm. Then she felt the icky red goop on her cheeks. She looked at her husband. He looked like he was going to die, but with all the goop on his face you couldn’t really tell his expression.

Quickly her mom and now dad started running down the big red carpet out to a limo. Elizabeth yanked the ring “bear’s” hand and they were off running, to absolutely no where.

It happened so fast! Elizabeth tripped! She reached for her dear loved one’s hand. He stumbled back looking in complete disgust at Elizabeth. He screeched at the top of his lungs “I am utterly repulsed!” Then he ran out of that room as fast as a boy being chased by a ghost!

“Wait!” cried Elizabeth faintly. By now all the guests were all gone. She was alone, all by herself in the way too big, and way too scary church.

She quietly walked out of the building and down the street to her pre-school to wait for her mommy to come pick her up for the wedding reception. Elizabeth cried and wiped the tears from her eyes until she was there.

Once she walked into the dull empty room, there she saw him with lipstick all over his face. There he stood, the light of her life. “Ring “bear” hey!”

“Get away from me I am getting a divorce!” he yelled

Elizabeth cried and cried.  She felt like there was nothing worse than this. She felt like she would never get over herself. She did though and all she had to know was that she was strong and that she would survive. Also, that marriages just didn’t always work out, they didn’t always last forever.

The End
