Algebra and Bananas

“You don’t know how to do Algebra? Eva said nibbling on her fried chicken.
“Young sit in the middle so I talk to you.” a 5th grade boy said.
“Well this is how you do it. A=1 b=2 C=3 D=4 and so on. Z=26.
“Now solve this problem.” Adam said, “Negative X plus positive Y.
“I have to do it on paper,” the boy answering the question said and he pulled out a new sheet of notebook paper.
“I’ll give you a banana!” someone cried, and whose cries echoed all around the lunchroom.
Ring! Ring! Lunch was over.
I knew the answer. One.
