The Seventh Dimension Amir Lowell 5th Grade
Cradled inside the reference section of the library, two boys had a conversation. The still air huddled above them and the only audible sound was the librarian briskly waking up and down the what-seemed endless isles. “Ms. Fayther is a nut!” one commented. “Giving a project so close to spring break is a sin!” “I know!” the other one clearly stated in a tangy voice, “Study the flowers of spring in Downtown Denver!” The first one mimicked, “Ah! I’ve always wanted to be a botanist!” “And in April it rains. How does she expect us to be botanists? Also, they say spring of 1985 is said to be a windy one too!” The first one scowled, and said, “Ms. Fayther...is a...Is a….” The doorbell that signaled the coming and going of someone rang and a man in a leather jacket appeared. On his head was a sombrero and both of his hands were curved in fists. What was in his hands was blocked from view except for a tiny glimpse of light. Cautiously he moved from the door to the circulation desk, all the while his head turning quite like an owl head. With no warning or sign the man cried, “I’ve got it! I’ve got it! I’ve got a specimen that will allow mankind to enter the seventh dimension! Did you know the seventh dimension is where the unseen lies?” He proudly sat the specimen, which looked like a time worn rock down on the desk in front of him. The librarian rushed over to see the rock, with the book cart dragging behind her. Rubbing her hands over its coarse surface she smiled. Wheeling the book cart around she took out a book from the book cart’s endless stacks that was titled The Legends of the Dimensions and Their Ecosystems. The librarian opened to a page a read: “The Dimensions of the Universe as said by G. Fitzgerald the explorer. The First Dimension- Peace, the Second Dimension- Flat Surfaces, the Third Dimension-Life, the Fourth Dimension-Time, the Fifth Dimension- Underworlds, the Sixth Dimension- Nature, The Seventh Dimension- The Unknown and the Eighth Dimension- The Heavens.” “You’ve done some research, I suppose?” The man asked. “Yes, I did Dr. Hayweather.” “And…” Dr. Hayweather questioned. “And I have found the entrance to the seventh dimension is in the library, inside the reference section.” Both the librarian and Dr. Hayweather made their way to the reference section where the two boys were still giving intense blows emotionally to Ms. Fayther. The two boys did not acknowledge Dr. Hayweather’s or the librarian’s presence. As the librarian and the doctor got closer to the many dictionaries and thesauri their tone became very vague. Dr. Hayweather lit a pipe in the midst of conversation and commanded: “Boys, while cursing Ms. Fayther, take of the books off the shelf. The entrance to the seventh dimension of is ‘hind that shelf. You’ll have the adventure of yowl lives.” The boys without thinking about anything but Ms. Fayther started mechanically taking dictionaries and encyclopedias and thesauri until they saw a door. Dr. Hayweather swung open the door and entered the Seventh Dimension.
