Splash

Something was wrong. I could feel it. I opened my eyes, but saw nothing. What? Had I gone blind?? I touched my eyes, and they were open. I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face. Where was I? And what was going on? I tried to scream, but nothing came out. I looked up, and saw a dim light slowly fading from view. I had a tingling feeling in my stomach. Then, I realized it.

I was falling. I wriggled around in the air, trying to figure out what to do. Where was I? First, I was asleep at home, and now… I was falling through some sort of pit. I pinched my arm... nothing. Slapped my face…nothing. This was no dream. But… what was it?

SPLASH! I felt my body sink through water. I closed my eyes tight, holding my breath. The water was freezing; I felt as though there were tiny icicles all over my body. I couldn’t hold my breath much longer. I opened my mouth, but no water flowed in. What was this? I opened my eyes. There was nothing to see. The water was a pale gray. I inhaled tentatively. I could breath. What the heck was going on?

I looked up. No light shone from above, but I knew there had to be something above me. I swam upward about 30 feet, but then, I felt my head hit something. Ow! Man, that hurt! I looked above me, but there was nothing there. Just water. I lifted one hand over my head, and it pressed against what felt like glass, like in an aquarium wall. Weird… I swam back down. What was I supposed to do? I looked around. There appeared to be no-one else in the water. If it was water, I didn’t know what to expect in this… place. I continued to swim down, might as well see how deep it is. Nothing else to do here.

Suddenly, I fell up. I was pulled up through the water, and I felt glass shatter around me as I broke through the surface. It was as though some invisible hand had yanked me out like a fly from some soup. I landed roughly on my back. I gave a groan, and stood up. Where was I now? I looked at the ground. It looked like the bottom of a pool on a sunny day, but it was like a mirror at the same time. Strange… I was walking on top of the water like it was glass. I looked at my surroundings. I was in a forest. I was walking on top of a lake.. This is not normal… I thought. I walked off the lake, and examined the forest. Well, you couldn’t call it a forest. It was more like a wasteland. Scorched trees scattered the dry land. Dead leaves formed piles on the ground. I walked through the ‘forest’, looking around. This was weird. Where was I? I looked to the sky. Two bright suns glowed weakly on the barren ground.

Suddenly, I heard a strange noise, like a pot of water boiling on the stove-top. I looked to the lake, and it was bubbling. The water turned red like lava, and it evaporated with a wisp of steam. I gasped, and turned to the trees. Each had a small fire at the bottom of them, which slowly climbed them like vines on a grape trellis. The leaves disappeared in a burst of sparks. I felt myself slowly getting hotter and hotter. I looked up, and gasped. The two suns were getting larger and larger, closer and closer. I closed my eyes, waiting for what was to come. And then, I heard a ‘boom’. I could feel my body disintegrating, separating into a billion pieces like dust when it’s brushed off of an old book. I opened my eyes, seeing blackness…

And then, I heard a ‘splash’.
