Nothing By: Kate, 6th grade I opened my eyes and all I could see was Nothing. I looked to the right then to the left, but all my vision was Nothing. After blinking several times I could see the nurse. The nurse, Nurse Esrun was crouched down beside me on the floor. Suddenly, a throbbing pain was killing me on forehead. “I hate you, Nothing!” I yelled, pain becoming stronger in my head. I was extremely angry at the guy who told me that slamming your head on your locker would open it. I had forgotten my combination and tried doing Nothing’s advice. I guess I must have passed out! “You didn’t have to take my advice,” Nothing added shyly, “sorry.” I sounded a large “Humph!” and tried to stand up, but fell back down. “Come on sweetie, Martha; let’s get you to the hospital to check for internal bleeding. Nothing you come too.” Just as I was about to stand up a bunch of men picked me up, careful not to shake me around. They walked to the elevator. One guy suddenly sneezed taking off a hand to cover his mouth. “AAAAHHHHHH!!!” I screamed falling to the floor, now in more pain than ever. “You dummies, I only called you so she wouldn’t get hurt but now look what you’ve done!” I heard Nurse Esrun shout. Black Out Once again I opened my eyes and all I saw was Nothing. All there was, was Nothing. This guy’s name was Nothing; he also had a twin sister named Something. Anyways, my vision came to be a hospital room. A doctor was there, Nothing was there, Nurse Esrun was there, and my parents were there. I heard a sigh of relief and began talking ignoring all the new pain I had gotten from the fall. “Well how am I Doc?” I questioned. “There seems to be no internal bleeding, but you killed a few hundred thousand brain cells, and for the next week you may experience random unconsciousness. That means you’ll be staying home resting for these next two weeks. You might want to get some Tylenol for pain. If by any chance you pass out after next week or so come see me,” The doctor explained. I once again tried to stand up, failing miserably though to even sit up. So, I was taken out on a gurney to my parents’ smart car. The men that had dropped me earlier set me gently, without fail, onto the leather car seat and closed the door. On the way home my parents began a dreadful talk about thinking things through before doing them. This wasn’t going to be fun. “Why on Earth did you take that boys advice????” Ma demanded. “Do you know how lucky you are that you don’t have internal bleeding, I mean that can kill a person! What were you thinking????” “Ma, listen,” I stated feebly. “Now what am I supposed to do? You just don’t seem to learn your lesson, do you?” “Sweetie Martha’s trying to talk,” my dad interrupted. “Ma, the bell had already rung, I couldn’t remember my locker combination because my Spanish Test was next, that seemed the only solution since I’d seen other guys do it. Ma, I didn’t have much time to think I….” Suddenly I stopped too tired to continue. “Well then you should…” I heard the first four words of what Ma said when I passed out again. Black Out I opened my eyes and all I saw was Nothing. Having triple day ja vou I blinked my eyes several times. This time Nothing wasn’t even there, I was just imagining him. This time I was in my room. I could now see my round bed, high ceiling, indoor swing, second level of my room, and TV. I got up and looked out the tiny window I had secretly put in and saw a rock come flying towards the inexpensive window. Diving for my bed the window shattered and I saw a note tied to the rock. Careful not to step on the broken glass I looked out the window again, but nobody was there. I read the note it said; Martha, Meet me behind the bushes, ALONE, or never show your face again. Come at 10:00 p.m. TONIGHT. Tell this to no one. -? This message was really creepy. I had never come to this situation before, but I decided to think about it so my mother wouldn’t yell at me about that. Well, it could be a serial killer who was out to get me like a stalker. It could be a super hero who was trying to save me from something; then again the message was bad. I didn’t know what to do. “I guess I’ll start by repairing this window,” mumbling to myself. I swept up the glass quickly, called the people, and was thankful that my parents were gone from our estate for the next hour. They came right over, and before I knew it I had a new window. They left and 15 minutes later my parents were back. Suddenly I heard a knock on the door. I closed the shade that they thought was just for decoration and dove for my turquoise bed. “Are you awake, Martha?” My mother whispered. “Yes,” I replied. “Would you like a sundae? I already made them.” She entered my room and handed me a nice big sundae with the spoon stuck in it. Immediately, I grabbed for it, pain beginning to seep through my arm muscles of being too sore. She sat on the bed next to me and began apologizing. “Martha, I want to tell you I’m sorry for yelling at you in the car. I thought it over and I can see why you slammed your head on your locker. I mean you were in a nervous situation and that was your only solution. I hope you like the sundae.” “Thanks, Mom,” I replied. We both ate the rest of our sundaes in silence watching TV. When she finally left with my empty sundae bowl I turned on the TV again to pay per view. The movie was supposed to be random but instead a blank white screen popped up. Black words began popping across the screen and I had to strain to read them. They said; Martha, make sure you come to the bushes tonight at 10:00 p.m. Or else. Once again I was really creeped out, this time to the point I began sobbing. This was terrible and the only thing I ever did was make myself pass out from hitting it too hard. “I’M GONNA DIE!” I screamed inside my mind. After finally getting over crying I began to read my book with tear drenched cheeks. Surprisingly, my book that I actually just started was my same situation, sort of. This person had a stalker who finally told her to meet him somewhere, or else. I read on seeing how she handled the situation. She ended up meeting the person alone, but brought one of her father’s loaded assault rifles. This person actually was a good person. Then the clock struck 9:30 p.m. I placed my bookmark and decided to go find one of my father’s guns. I didn’t know anything about them so I decided to pick something I could carry. I found one about six inches long that was pretty light weight. One thing nice was that I knew that my father always kept his guns loaded. He had said that he would keep all of them loaded so in case of an emergency we would be okay. The clock struck 9:58 p.m. and I hurried on my way hoping I wouldn’t be late. The gun was stuck in my coat pocket, on the inside, as I ran down the stairs and out the back kitchen door. Turning to the right I ran towards the bushes in the huge garden we had. As I got closer I slowed down and made even less noise. I walked behind the bushes now not even breathing when I came to see Nothing there. “Nothing, you’re my stalker?” I squeak- whispered. Instantly before he could answer I gave him a big hug, just happy it was him, NOT a serial killer. As I let go he began to explain. “Yes, Martha, I’m your ‘stalker,’” he began with parenthesis. “Listen, actually I never intended to do the ‘or else’ thing, that was just to make sure you came.” “Well, then, what’s the big deal?” I asked. “It’s actually the press. They want you to do interviews, go to Hollywood, all that stuff I know you hate. The thing is, unless you want that, you’ll have to come with me and delete everything at the newspaper place that’s about you. If the town doesn’t know then no one will know. It’s happened before, the whole paper got deleted once, and everything that was written then was never typed again. So, we have to do it tonight unless, you want fame,” he explained. “Okay, I’ll do it,” I decided. “Then let’s go. We’ve got to finish before 2:00 a.m.,” He told me. “Alright,” I agreed” From there we ran to where the paper was typed up before it was printed. Nothing began whispering, “Okay, I’ve already got a key and code from my dad, who approves of this for some reason. Come on!” I followed him around to the side of the building. He unlocked the gate, and then pressed in the code and we ran into the building up to all the computers. While running up the stairs we heard a security guard. Instantly, Nothing covered my mouth with his hand knowing that I would freak out when I was actually relaxed. The security guard decided not to come down the stair well and instead walked the other way. We both sighed. As we crept up to the room, my arms began shaking from being too nervous. Nothing pressed in a new code and the door opened. I followed him into the room to the main computer and he logged on. “Go stand guard” he seemed to say with his expression, so I did. The door had been closed behind us, of course almost silently, so I kept gazing my eyes back and forth down the hallway through the window that was smaller than mine. I heard a little ding that I strained to hear when Nothing was by my side smiling and nodding, the mission was a success; lets get out of hear! I nodded back trying to be as good as he was at the body language thing. He opened the door and I followed him all the way down outside of the building. Once again he pressed in a code, but accidentally hit slightly the wrong key, that’s when a major screeching alarm went off that the whole town could probably hear. We ran quickly, I panting to keep up as security guards began running out at us. I heard Nothing’s voice say, “To the junk yard,” so I ran behind him that way. After actually running two miles and the siren already stopped, we gave it a rest running at the junkyard. “What are we supposed to do? If we walk out there, they’re sure to think it’s us and catch us!” I whispered. “I have an idea,” Nothing stated. “The movies are over that way so if we start walking on the sidewalk over there like two teens on a date from the movie we actually might be able to get home safely,” He explained. “I don’t like this idea, but okay if that’s the only thing you got,” I grunted. So we carried out the plan walking over there like that- hand in hand. I was just thankful the whole way home we saw nobody, but we kept it up the whole way just in case for spies. When we got home behind the bushes before Nothing could say anything I gave him a big thank you hug, and ran towards the mansion winking on the way over there telling him see you tomorrow at school. I came through the kitchen door, but the lights were instantly turned on, on me. It was my parents. “Now where were you? What did you do? And how are you?” Ma fired away questions. So, I told them the story, soon figuring out themselves where the alarm came from. They mainly were just happy that I was okay. My bad news was that I didn’t have to pull this stunt anyway, my parents could have just sued the paper for unwritten permission. Suddenly, it hit me. I still hand Dad’s gun! “Dad, here’s your gun I took.” I handed it to him and he gave me a hug for returning it. So I went back to my bedroom remembering that I wouldn’t see Nothing at school tomorrow because I was passing out. Black Out The End
