No Where to Go By Meredith, 7th grade WARNING: THE FOLLOWING STORY CONTAINS VIOLENCE AND MURDER “Krista, I’m leaving you home alone tonight while your father and I go to a party… I’m trusting in you that you’ll stay home and pass out the candy to the trick-or-treaters, and NO WILD PARTIES!” I rolled my eyes. “Okay mom, fine.” I hated Halloween. Every year my parents went out to the Masterson’s for a party, and I was stuck giving Twix bars to greedy little kids. This year, I decided that I would leave a note on a barrel-full of candy saying “Please take one,” like all the elderly people do when they want to go to sleep instead of sit outside passing out candy. This way, Jane and I could go to this huge party at Carissa’s house (the most popular girl at high school), so I we wouldn’t be stuck at the bottom of the food chain like last year. “Bye Mom, bye Dad!” I shut the door after them and made my old-person candy sign. I taped it to a bowl and set it out on the front steps. Next, I took out my cell phone and dialed Jane. “Hey Jane, its Krista… I know I said I couldn’t come to the party the other day, but my mom said it was okay today. See ya’ soon.” I grabbed my jacket and jogged down the block to Jane’s house. When I got there, Jane was on the phone with a guy. She hung up and smiled. “Don’t worry; we don’t have to ride with my dad anymore. I met this guy the other day, and he said he knew Carissa. He’s gonna give us a ride to the party.” I nodded my head in reply. Ten minutes later a car pulled up in the driveway. A young brunette man in sunglasses got out and shook our hands. “Hey, I’m Tyler… ready to go?” We hopped into the car and we drove away. I wasn’t sure where exactly Carissa’s house was, so I wasn’t too worried when we turned onto a dark, gravel road. A couple minutes later, we turned into a driveway leading up to an abandoned house. Jane looked at Tyler, confused. “Where are we?” she asked, trembling. Tyler turned to her, the polite, friendly expression left his face, and a cold, serious one replaced it. “This isn’t Carissa’s house? Hmm, I must have got the address wrong.” He smiled cruelly and leaned towards Jane. Jane instinctively slapped him on the face and tried opening the door. Unfortunately, Tyler was a safe driver and had locked the doors before starting the car. She fumbled around with her hands, trying to find the unlock button. I didn’t want to abandon Jane, but my heart was racing with fear. Luckily though, I saw a tiny red unlock button and quickly pressed it down. At the same time as I threw open my door, Jane tumbled out of the car and started sprinting towards the old house. “Wait up!” I screamed at her. She shook her head and ran faster. “I’m not gonna die out here in the middle of the night!” she screamed and pushed open the front door. I wanted to cry. I could hear footsteps behind me, getting closer. I was never a good runner. My side ached but I continued to run, not only because my life depended on it, but because I was so scared my muscles forgot how to stop moving. I finally reached the house and ducked behind a tall china cabinet. I tried to catch my breath before Tyler approached the house, but I saw his shadow form in the doorway and I knew it was all over. “I know you’re in here Krista!” He sounded angry and frustrated, and I wanted no part in this. “YOU CAN’T HIDE FOREVER!!!” Out of hysteria I laughed quietly. This can’t be real, this can’t be real. I repeated to myself. But before my mind could agree with my thoughts the china cabinet was thrown away from me and I saw Tyler, a silver knife in his hand. My heart was pounding; I couldn’t even let out a scream! “TYLER, YOU CAN’T!” I heard Krista shout from the balcony above. I tried to warn her that Tyler had a knife and was prepared to kill, but of course my throat refused to cooperate. Tyler began to move; obviously he had forgotten about the helpless bundle below him, so I quickly scooted away from the staircase and finally caught my breath. I was about to faint when I heard a shriek and Krista jumped off the top landing. “GET UP JANE! WE HAVE TO LEAVE NOW!!!!” I tried to stand up, but I was frozen with fear. Krista grabbed my arm and propped it on her shoulder, trying to pull me up. I finally gained full consciousness again and stood up. We rushed through the front door and Krista pulled me to the side of the house. “Are you okay??? Can you run?” Krista was worried and I could tell she was about to break into tears. “He’s gonna kill me!” She couldn’t take the suspense any longer. I became calmer and I knew it was my turn to lead. We WILL make it out of here alive, both of us!” I tugged Krista up off the ground and we sprinted towards Tyler’s car. Unfortunately, it was too late. While we were talking, Tyler had snuck out of the house and crouched behind the back tire of his car. As Krista reached for the door handle, time stopped and all actions became slow motion. Tyler jumped out and plunged his knife through her chest. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. My best friend was being butchered in front of my own two eyes! I screamed and tried to save her, but I knew she was already gone. The only light that shone in my heart was dedicated to her, and Tyler had simply blown it out in one swift movement. I screamed, hoping there were neighbors to this house, but then I remembered we were in the middle of nowhere, no matter how loud or long I screamed, no one would hear me. So I ran. I don’t remember how long or how fast, but I ran until I fell to the ground, awaiting my death. Krista had died saving us, and I couldn’t live without her. She was my only friend, and I wasn’t going to stay on Earth without her. I held my breath until I passed out and eventually died in the middle of the street, in the middle of nowhere, on Halloween night. The next week, Krista and Jane’s bodies were found by a young man as he was driving to work one day. No one knew who killed them, and the man who reported them disappeared the very next day. But no one would consider the young brunette who went missing to be the murderer of two young ladies.
