First Quarter Progress Report: This quarter the kindergarteners learned how to classify objects by their likenesses. They used this skill to classify seeds. Students were also introduced to our lab animals as an introduction to living things. Students discussed the characteristics of living things and used that knowledge to sort living and non-living things in our classroom. Finally, the students observed all of the animals in the Science Lab in order to classify them by their body coverings (smooth, moist skin, scales, feathers, fur, and exoskeleton). (SC-P-3.4.2 and SC-P-3.4.1) This quarter the first graders had the opportunity to go on a School Yard Safari. After making a list of all the characteristics of living things, they used tools such as a hand lens to observe organisms on the school grounds. They developed a list of characteristics of living things and compared plants to animals. The students collected samples of living, nonliving, and once living things to physically sort and then communicated their findings in a data table. Finally, the students observed all of the animals in the Science Lab in order to classify them by their body coverings (smooth, moist skin, scales, feathers, fur, and exoskeleton). (SC-P-3.4.2 and SC-P-3.4.1) This quarter the second graders learned what it means to be a scientist. Using wintergreen lifesavers the students learned how to make scientific observations using their five senses. They explored how scientists use classification to group organisms by their likenesses. This provided an opportunity for the students to classify objects found in nature as well as to justify their reasons for putting the objects in certain groups. Finally, the students observed all of the animals in the Science Lab in order to classify them by their body coverings (smooth, moist skin, scales, feathers, fur, and exoskeleton). (SC-P-3.4.2 and SC-P-3.4.1)
