Homework Policy

  1. It is the student’s responsibility to complete homework.
  2. I take my time to carefully grade and monitor student learning and therefore expect students to take the time to claim their hared work.  Homework should be legible and labeled with name, date and assignment.  Students may be asked to redo assignments that are nameless or without the assignment.
  3. Students will be assigned homework Monday through Friday.  I expect all homework to be turned in on time (the next day, unless otherwise specified in the Homework Journal).  I will accept work that is one day late for 50% of the credit.  After that, I will not accept work.  No excuses.  Homework/Classwork that is not completed will be averaged as a zero.  Even one zero can drastically lower a grade.  The lowest homework grade for each subject will be dropped from the final average to allow for emergency situations.
  4. Students are required to read for 30 minutes each evening for homework.  Please provide a quiet, uninterrupted time for nightly reading.  A parent/guardian signature is required in the Homework Journal for credit.
  5. Students will write their homework assignments in their homework journal every day in class.  Please check it nightly to make sure your child has completed all assignments.
  6. In the event of an absence, students are responsible for completing the missed homework.  They may copy the assignment from another student in the class into their homework journal and any handouts will be placed in the student’s cubby.

Participation

Students will receive a participation grade that constitutes 10% of their final grade.  In order to receive full participation for the grading period, students must exhibit the following behavior:

ü       Student has all the needed materials and is prepared for class

ü       Student chooses an appropriate attitude for the day

ü       Student works well with others in his or her group

ü       Student shows respect for teachers, students, and special visitors

ü       Student remains on task throughout all activities

Homework Journal

Each student will receive a 1-subject spiral notebook that is to be with them at all times (home and school).  This notebook will hold each student’s daily homework, as well as any special announcements.  The homework journal does require a parent signature every evening.  It is the students’ responsibility to keep up with their homework journals.

Grade Update

Students begin receiving grades for the first time this year.  Each student will receive a report card every nine weeks.  On this report card will be grades in the following subject areas:  Reading , Spelling, Writing, Math, Science, & Social Studies, as well as any special area classes.  I will send home a Grade Update sheet 4 ½ weeks into each grading period (mid-term).  This sheet will consist of your child’s current grade in each subject area and what he or she can do to improve.  This sheet will require a parent signature.
