A Note from Mrs. Mudd

Where is this school year going?  It is hard to believe that we are coming upon the end of the first half of our school year.  As I reflect back, I can see the children growing in size as well as knowledge.   Our classes are growing and growing!  We now have 15 children in the morning class and 17 children in the pm class.  We are so excited to have some new friends!!

This past month we talked about My Friend the Fire Fighter and Exploring Art.  While covering the topic of Fire Safety we learned that the fire fighter is our friend, stop, drop and roll if your clothes are on fire, crawl low under smoke when getting out of a building on fire, and be aware of things that are safe for play and things that you need to stay away from.   The high light of the week was visiting with real fire fighters and being able to touch and explore their truck.   I was very pleased with our learning outcomes!

Then we moved on to Exploring Art.  The Goals for this unit of study were for the children to use a variety of tools for drawing and participate in a variety of visual art, dance, music and drama.   The morning class was fortunate enough to see the Opera of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  They were mesmerized by the performance.  They were a great audience.  The children are learning how to distinguish low sounds vs. low sounds and soft vs. loud sounds in music.  Thanks to all who came out for Family Art days!  The kids have loved talking about their families coming to school.

In December our first topic of Study will be Kids in the Kitchen.  We will be observing changes, exploring cause and effect as well as measurement and other scientific properties.  Then we will be ending the month with an in depth study of the story The Gingerbread Man.  Our goals for this unit of study will be for the children to use emerging reading skills to make meaning from print and to comprehend and interpret meaning from the story.

Thanks to all who come out in support of our Early Start Family story time!!  If you would like to be our next mystery reader please let me know.  Our next family story time will be on January 13!

The children have also start going to special classes on a regular basis.  They are enjoying it so much.  I have attached a copy of our special class rotation.  It is a little confusing.  We have a 6 day rotation of classes.  Today was day 3 in the rotation, Monday will be day 4, Tuesday will be day 5, etc.  If you have any questions please ask.

Art-to-Go Bags 2008-2009

Home work bags will begin coming home on December 1st. Please read over the attached permission and information slip and return them after thanksgiving break.  We will be sending home the Art-to-Go bags first.  They will go out on Fridays and students will return them on Mondays. It is very important that all materials in the bag are cared for and returned in good condition. It would be very frustrating to get a bag with missing or broken pieces.   Thank you for your help in advance!!

Thanks to everyone for their support and words of encouragement during my absence last week.  I had a little health scare but I am much, much better!  During my absence the children did not miss a beat!  Thanks to Mrs. Carter and the substitutes, Mrs. Kikuchi and Mrs. Simpson for keeping the learning strong.

We are doing our best to keep up with coats, hats, gloves, scarves, umbrellas, etc.  Please help us by putting your child’s name on all belonging and calling as soon as an item comes up missing.  With so many children it is beginning to be a challenge.

See the note on the other side about our Winter Celebration. That will be coming up before winter break.   I would like to say in closing that I have had so much fun working with your child.  I can’t wait to see what the second half of the school year will bring!

Winter Celebration

We will be having our Winter Celebration on Tuesday, December 18th.  Parents are welcome to come and help!  Parking will be limited at school this day.  Please keep this in mind.  Our theme this year is The Gingerbread Man.  The children will be making a craft that will be used with a game, making a gingerbread treat, singing gingerbread man songs and enjoying several ginger bread man stories.  You can help us out by donating two dollar to help cover the cost of the craft and the snack or sending in a needed item.  Our home room parent will be in contact with you the week of December 1st.  Please put the money in an envelope or baggie with a note that says “money for party” by December 14th.   It is very important to get the items in or money in by December 14th  so that we can have everything ready for our Winter Celebration.  Thanks in advance for all your help!
