Hi!  My name is Mary Jane Elliott and I am the Music Specialist at Liberty School.  I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Kentucky and a Master's Degree in Music from Eastern Kentucky University.  I hold Level III Orff Certification.  I have taught music in Fayette County Schools for 27 years.

If you visit our Music Room, you will see that we learn about music in a myriad of ways.  We will sing, play instruments, dance, create music, write music, improvise music and listen to a broad range of musical styles.  Whenever possible, my class is a hands-on class.  There are no chairs in our room.  We need the space for moving, dancing and playing our beautiful instruments.  New to our room this year is a  Yamaha Clavinova piano.

If you have studied the Kentucky Core Content page for music, you will have noticed that we study spirituals, patriotic music, Native American music, West African music and a wide repertoire of music.     Throughout the year, we will perform spirituals such as Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Halloween music, and songs which represent diverse cultures - Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Brazil's "Carnaval," Martin Luther King, Chinese New Year, etc. I want to assure you that all of these things are included as a tool to teach the Kentucky Core Content for Music and to expand your child's musical horizons.  Listening to different kinds of music is like tasting different foods. :) We do not focus on the lyrics as much as how the elements of music are used in the various musical styles.

If you have any concerns regarding any aspect of our  music education curriculum at Liberty Elementary School, please call me or send me an email.  I will be happy to meet with you or answer any questions or concerns which you may have.  Thank you.
