Mr. Mark Russell
I teach 6th grade social studies for the Champions at Morton Middle School in Lexington, Kentucky. I first started here at Morton in 1995, after teaching for four years in upstate South Carolina.
Education
After I earned a B.A. in History/ German at Loyola University of Chicago, I then received my M.A. from the University of Kentucky and my M. A. T. at the University of South Carolina. While I was an undergraduate, I spent a year abroad at the Universitaet Salzburg.
Teaching Philosophy
Like most teachers, I believe in the value of a solid, well-rounded education. In addition to giving my students the facts they need to understand a complex world, I want them to think independently. To this end, I encourage students to look at both sides of the issue.
Students in my class study geography, history, government and civics, economics, and culture. I attempt to review current events twice weekly. I support the work of our language arts teachers and incorporate a good deal of writing into my class.
On Being Successful
I believe in the importance of regular review in social studies and want my students to study their notes daily. Students who are organized do well in school, so I ask students to keep their written work in a three-ring binder. Never throw away graded work. After the quarter is over, remove the old work from your binder and keep it until the end of the year. For certain writing assignments, I'll ask you to keep your graded copy in your language arts folder.
Talk to your parents about what you are learning in social studies. Their opinions can help bring the material to life, too!
Finally, if you need extra help, see me. That's why I'm here.
My Quote
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it 's the only thing that ever has."
By Margaret Mead
