AP Statistics
Room 708
Welcome to Ms. Cole’s AP
Statistics class!
I’m looking forward to a wonderful
school year, and I would like to take a moment first to explain to you the
format and rules of this class.
At the end of this packet there is a sheet
to be signed by both student and parent, and to be returned to me at the next
class meeting. This sheet simply states
that you have read and understood the rules and the set-up of this class.
(I) Required
Materials
·
3-ring binder
·
Graph paper
·
Loose leaf notebook paper (Spiral
notebook paper will not be accepted unless the ragged edges are cut off.)
·
Pencil and eraser
·
Red Pen
·
Ruler
·
Graphing calculator* (This is highly
recommended but not required. If you
want or feel like you need to buy a graphing calculator, but have trouble
affording one, please see me.) I recommend
purchasing the TI-83+, TI-84+ (regular or Silver Edition), or the TI-Nspire (the non-CAS version).
·
KLEENEX and HAND
SANITIZER * (This is not required, but it would certainly be appreciated if you
could donate one box of tissue or one bottle of hand sanitizer to the
classroom.) J
(II) Homework
·
All homework
assignments must be done in pencil.
·
All assignments should
be labeled with your name and with the page or ditto number assigned.
·
For homework to be
accepted you must: (i) write down the original
problem (or given information for word problems); (ii) show all work; and (iii)
put any and all graphs on graph paper.
·
The worth of each
homework assignment will vary depending on its difficulty and length.
·
The collection of
homework will also vary. Sometimes
homework will:
(a) be checked for completion only.
(b) be graded for accuracy.
(c) be collected and graded over selected problems only.
(d) not be collected for a grade at all.
·
Regardless of the grading process, answers for homework
will ALWAYS be checked.
·
Late homework will not be accepted. It goes down as a zero. No exceptions.
(III) Exams
and Quizzes
·
Exams and quizzes are
always announced.
(IV) Notebooks
·
Notebooks are not
required, but are highly recommended. AP
Statistics is a demanding course, which will require you to keep up with a lot
of material. An organized notebook can
prove invaluable.
(V) Grade
Reports
·
Class grade reports
will go home after every exam.
·
These reports are to
be signed by the parent and returned at the next class meeting.
·
Signed and returned
grade reports will be worth 10 points.
These will go down in the grade book as a homework grade.
·
Even though homework
is not accepted late, I do accept late grade reports. One point is deducted for each school day
late.
(VI) Grading
Scale
·
The grading scale for
this class is as follows:
92 - 100% A
83 - 91% B
74 - 82% C
65 - 73% D
0 - 64% F
·
Your cumulative class
grade will be broken down as follows.
This is a uniform grading policy which is used in all classes at
CATEGORY 1 50%
(Category 1 will encompass traditional “daily” work.
Typical examples include homework checked on a daily basis, work
completed in a single class meeting, and quiz over material taught in a single
block.)
CATEGORY 2 50%
(Category 2 will encompass work that assesses or is the culmination of
several days of class instruction or preparation.
Typical examples include unit/chapter tests, class
presentations, projects, AP Free Response questions, and quizzes that
cover several days of material.)
(VII) Absences
·
If you are absent, one
of the best ways to get caught up is to talk with a classmate. I recommend exchanging phone numbers with a
buddy or two from class the very first day.
This way you can always call them for the assignment and ask to copy
missed notes.
With our alternative block schedule, keeping on top of your
statistics work is crucial! Do not
expect to receive “catch up” instruction during class time when you
return. We simply do not have time for
that.
·
Homework assignments
are written daily on the class calendar (located on the bulletin board). Stop by my room any time to look up your
missed assignments.
·
Homework assignments
are also posted daily on my website. You
can check there as well. The web address
is:
http://staff.fcps.net/scole
·
Make-up work must be
submitted in a timely manner. You have
the number of days that you missed plus one more school day to make up and turn
in your work. Late make-up work will not be accepted.
If you are confused as to when your make up work is due, then ASK
ME!!! I do not mind helping you figure
it out. Better safe than sorry.
(VIII) Appointments (Doctor, Dentist,
Orthodontist, Driver’s License, etc.)
·
To parents: If math is a difficult subject for your
child, please do your best to avoid scheduling appointments during Statistics
class. An A/B
rotation schedule for the entire school year is posted on my class website (as
well as on the school website under “Information”) for reference when
scheduling appointments.
(IX) Field
Trips
·
If you are going on a
field trip, you are responsible for turning in any work due that day before
you go on your trip.
·
You are also
responsible for getting the assignment for that day and having it ready to turn
in at our next class meeting.
(X) School
Rules
·
All school rules will
be followed.
(XI) Basic
Rule of the Classroom
·
Treat others as you
wish to be treated. A high level of
mutual respect is to be maintained at all times ... respect amongst all,
students and teachers alike. Disrespect
will not be tolerated.
(XII) A Final
Word
·
I, as the instructor,
reserve the right to alter or add to this outline as needed. No changes will be made, however, without
verbal announcement to the class.
And if that wasn’t
enough …

Classroom
Goal:
There are
two primary goals in Ms. Cole’s mathematics classes. First and foremost, our goal is for every
student to become knowledgeable in mathematics.
In addition to the mathematical knowledge, our second goal is to help
every student become an active participant and valued member of our small
learning community.
Guidelines
for Success:
Take responsibility
Commit to learning
Honor self and others
Serve and contribute
Commodore
Four:
1.
Turn
off all personal technology from 8:25 – 3:15.
2.
Follow
the 10/10 rule. Hall passes are
available only between the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes of class.
3.
Use
appropriate language.
4.
Report
to class on time.
(* Follow all
school rules.)
Tardiness:
Any student
tardy to 1st block class without an excused note shall report to the
tardy table located in the hallway in front of the principals’ office. At that table the student will retrieve a
tardy pass to get into class. Students
tardy to 2nd, 3rd, or 4th block without an
excused note shall report to SAFE to retrieve their pass. Consequences begin at three accumulated tardies. (Refer to
the TCHS Student Code of Conduct for specific consequences.)
Upon
Entering Room 708:
When the
bell rings for class to start, students should be in their seats with materials
out (textbook, homework, paper, and pencil) ready to begin learning! J
Finding
Out Grade Status:
In addition
to grade reports that the teacher will send home after every test AND the grade
reports that the school sends home every six weeks (dates listed in the class
syllabus), parents can get an Infinite Campus Parent Portal pass code to access
their child’s grades on-line. There is a
link to the Infinite Campus web site on the TCHS Parents web page (www.tatescreek.fcps.net then click
on PARENTS in the navigation bar on the side).

WE ALL HAVE THE ABILITY TO SUCCEED!
