Welcome to the Art Room! I am Mrs. Ryder, the art teacher. All of the children, grades K-5, at Deep Springs come to art one hour every four days. We use a variety of materials including crayons, markers, paint, clay, glue and more! It is a good idea to dress for art class. In the same way that you dress for PE by wearing tennis shoes, you may want to dress for art day by wearing clothes that can get a little messy!
Our Kindergarten students explore use of materials and get to do a lot of painting, cutting, and drawing. Core content concepts include elements of art such as line, shape, color, and texture. The students learn about primary and secondary colors. They explore shape, texture and lines.
Elements of art also play a big role in the first grade art curriculum. The students will begin by learning about the different kinds of line and then will move on to color. Our three core cultures, Early American, Native American and West African are also explored during 1st grade. Landscape and portrait are two types of subject matter that first graders learn to recognize and create.
Value and contrast begin the year for second graders. We move on to Native American culture during the fall. Pattern is fully explored using a variety of media along with masks and puppets. African arts are also included in the 2nd grade content. Shape, form and texture and part of the lessons in the second half of the year.
We will begin the school year with a study of "scapes" such as landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes. Then we will go into a series of famous artists that will last almost until the end of the year. Some of the artists that we will learn about are Picasso, Faith Ringgold, Monet and Franz Marc. Artists styles and how the elements of art are used is emphasized.
Fourth grade students delve deeply into the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. They also get more involved in our three core content cultures: Colonial American, Native American and West African. A variety of media is used to explore both 2-D and 3-D art processes.
Fifth graders are tested in Arts and Humanities in the spring. This is a year for reviewing elements of art and exploring the cultures more fully. The students are expected to be able to write and respond to art using correct vocabulary. Games such as Bingo and Jeopardy are used to help reinforce the vocabulary but also practice tests and open response writing are ways that we help to prepare students for assessment. Lots of artwork is created along with writing practice.
