German Honor Society History

The German Honor Society became active on May 28, 1993 with a ceremony held in the library.  Principal Jon Akers made the opening remarks to guests and new members.  Michael Jones from the University of Kentucky German Department was the guest speaker.  Afterwards the new members took the oath of the honor society in a candle light ceremony.  A string quartet, all from the new group, entertained the gathering with selections from Mozart and Haydn.

Here is a list of the very first members of the Dunbar chapter of the Delta Epsilon Phi German Honor Society.

Some past events:

Former member Melissa Keinath was named UK's German student of the year for 2006-07.

Member Sarah Weck received the Congress-Bundestag scholarship to spend the entire 2006-07 school year in Germany.

In 2006 members went to the Hofbräuhaus in Newport.

Members in 2002 raised money to help a German exchange student attending West Jessamine High School who had been seriously injured in an accident.  While riding a bike with her host mother, she was struck by a car.  The money raised helped with hospital bills and transportation of her family from Germany.

In 2003 and 2004 members visited Clays Mill Elementary School to assist with a unit on Germany and German.  Students talked to the kids about German culture and taught them greetings, numbers etc.

In 2003 member John Zhang won the Jeopardy Teen Tournament.

In 1998 students collected food for God's Pantry Thanksgiving drive.

In 1996 the society organized a penny war among German classes to raise money for the Shop with a Cop program.  The money helped provide Christmas presents for children that otherwise wouldn't have had any.

In 1994 members attended a performance of Mozart works at the Singletary Center for the Arts.

In 1997 member Tiffany Bunch was awarded with the Congress-Bundestag Scholarship to live and attend school in Germany for a year.

Since the society's beginning, members have regularly met at Marikka's for German food and often the chance to talk with exchange students.
